The Elo [a] rating system is a method for calculating the relative skill levels of players in zero-sum games such as chess. It is named after its creator Arpad Elo , a Hungarian-American physics professor. The Elo system was originally invented as an improved chess-rating system over the previously used Harkness system , but is also used as a rating system in association football , American football , basketball , Major League Baseball , table tennis , board games such as Scrabble and Diplomacy , and esports , particularly Counter Strike: Global Offensive. The difference in the ratings between two players serves as a predictor of the outcome of a match. Two players with equal ratings who play against each other are expected to score an equal number of wins. A player's Elo rating is represented by a number which may change depending on the outcome of rated games played.

Matchmaking is a non-lethal method to eliminate a rival in Yandere Simulator. On the Schemes menu, the description is, "This scheme will end with your rival falling in love with another student. Each rival will have a crush other than Senpai , so the player will be able to matchmake every single rival with a male suitor. To begin the matchmaking process, the player must find out what the rival likes to see in a guy, both in terms of appearance and personality. This can be done by eavesdropping on the rival's conversations. After that, Ayano must then identify the suitor. This student will likely be someone who spends a lot of time near the rival.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection is adding cross-play support between Xbox One and PC in a future update, and now developer Industries has shared some details on how it will work and what's being done to ensure a fair experience. Technical designer Dana Jerpback said in a blog post that there will be input-based matchmaking for certain playlists. The Infection and Firefight playlists, for example, will not have input-based matchmaking because those modes are more cooperative than competitive. Competitive playlists, meanwhile, will have more rigid rules about inputs, and in some cases it might be locked to only a single input. Other possibilities include people playing together with some using a controller and others using mouse and keyboard.
Matchmaking is the existing automated process in League of Legends that matches a player to and against other players in games. The system estimates how good a player is based on whom the player beats and to whom the player loses. It knows pre-made teams are an advantage, so it gives pre-made teams tougher opponents than if each player had queued alone or other premades of a similar total skill level Riot Games Inc. The basic concept is that the system over time understands how strong of a player you are, and attempts to place you in games with people of the same strength. As much as possible, the game tries to create matches that are a coin flip between players who are about the same skill.
