RV parks often have both 30 amp and 50 amp receptacles. However, some RV parks will only have 50 amp receptacles. If you have a 30 amp service RV, you may be concerned that you cannot find a 30 amp receptacle to plug into. Fortunately, 30 amp RVs can plug into 50 amp outlets, and vice versa. Purchase a power adapter to plug a 30 amp service RV into a 50 amp outlet. This power adapter should be designed to withstand all weather conditions.

The option to run a amp recreational vehicle, or RV, from a 50 amp outlet is useful to many RVers. To avoid catastrophic damage to appliances, equipment and wiring circuits, and a real danger of fire, the amperage must be stepped down to 30 amps. This is easily done, by using a male to female connector, referred to by RVers and manufacturers as a "dogbone" connector, because it has two bulbous terminals joined by a short, slender cord. Dogbone adapters comprise a heavy-duty three-conductor wire between a amp plug and a amp outlet. They work by leaving one of the 50 amp outlet's two positive volt legs unconnected to the amp outlet. Confirm there is power to the dogbone adapter, before plugging in the camper.

Although a 50 amp service for a recreational vehicle, or RV, is connected to four wires and uses a four-prong plug, it is still a three pole service with only hot, neutral and ground connections. It is different from a conventional volt service in that there are two volt hot feeds, or legs, each at 50 amps. A 50 amp service is not a 30 amp service and a 20 amp service joined together. Even the largest RVs, when plugged into 50 amp service, still almost universally use this double-hot-pole, or double-bus, installation to draw only volts to two separate volt circuits simultaneously, thereby accessing a possible 12, watts of power. Buy a 50 amp outlet which is pre-installed into product-specific, self-contained, weather-proof box.
