This year, though, speaker after speaker at the Democratic National Convention demanded equal treatment based on sexual orientation and gender identity. And for the first time at any political convention, an openly transgender woman addressed the delegates. Biden Jr. The first openly transgender convention speaker, Sarah McBride, testified to that evolution in her own Thursday night convention speech. At the time, I was scared. Obama repealed the stopgap policy in after nearly two decades on the books.

The sample size of Jews — just out of over 9, respondents — made a breakdown into age, attendance of religious service, or political views impossible. But for larger segments of the study, those factors had a dramatic effect on views on gay marriage. The youngest adult Americans are twice as likely to support gay marriage as the oldest. Democrats appear ready to embrace same-sex marriage as part of their party platform, a policy shift that reflects an expanded acceptance of gay rights in mainstream politics. The move would place the party in line with the beliefs of President Obama, who in May became the first sitting president to declare that gay men and lesbians should be able to marry. Democratic Party officials had squabbled over the issue in the past. But at a platform-drafting meeting over the weekend in Minneapolis, they approved the first step to amend their platform, placing the amendment on track for adoption. In two weeks, the entire platform committee will vote at a meeting scheduled in Detroit.
