The first trimester can be an exciting but anxious time. Expectant parents often need to wait for up to 15 weeks before they get their public maternity hospital appointment and the reassurance that everything is fine with their baby. With our private ultrasound scans, you can get this reassurance as soon as 8 weeks gestation so you can begin to enjoy your pregnancy with peace of mind. Pregnancy Scans performed during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy are generally within 3 — 5 days of accuracy. The most accurate time for the due date calculation is between 8 and 11 weeks pregnant.

Can your pregnancy scan give the wrong due date?

Pregnancy Ultrasound Scans in 1st, 2nd & 3rd Trimester
An ultrasound is a highly accurate means of dating a pregnancy. In a normal pregnancy, ultrasound can provide an estimate of the gestational age to within five to seven days of accuracy. In the first trimester, doctors usually use a transvaginal rather than abdominal ultrasound. The transvaginal ultrasound provides the most accurate information, given that the early developing gestational sac and fetal pole are extremely tiny at this point. A transvaginal ultrasound can get closer to the developing pregnancy. In a transvaginal ultrasound, the doctor or technician inserts a thin probe into the vagina. During the ultrasound, they take a series of measurements, including the size of the gestational sac, the size of the yolk sac, the length of the fetal pole, and the heart rate.

Ultrasound scans in pregnancy
Original date given was 18 December but at the scan it was moved to 31 Dec. Unless you have an early pregnancy scan most of you will be given your estimated due date at the week scan. Of course you have probably already used an online due date calculator. Weird huh? But this will only give you a rough idea.

Ultrasound can be used as a clinical diagnostic tool in late pregnancy to assess the baby's condition when there are complications, or to detect problems which may not otherwise be apparent. If such problems are identified this may lead to changes in care and an improved outcome for babies.
