Franz Kafka's other trial | Books | The Guardian
On his deathbed, emaciated and robbed of strength, almost unable to speak or swallow, his breaths short and percussive as he coughed his life away, Kafka communicated with Dora Diamant and his doctors by scribbling notes on slips of paper. As his energies ebbed, Kafka reviewed the proofs of his last and starkest short story collection, A Hunger Artist. Brod had urged the publisher to rush the volume into print. His style of writing was unique because until then, no other authors put their protagonists in the kind of dead-end situations as he. Some critics claim that Kafka was a political prophet because his best-known works are the incomprehensible social-bureaucratic powers that in many ways caused existential anxiety, alienation, guilt and even absurdity.
In one of his notebooks — revealed to the public for the first time in Jerusalem on Wednesday — he sketched a man lying in bed, perhaps depicting his own terminal illness and auguring the end. The notebook and materials arrived recently at the National Library of Israel from Zurich, where they had been held in safe deposit boxes. They are the final batch of a vast trove of original texts and manuscripts by the celebrated German-speaking, Jewish writer that had been entrusted to a friend. Brod just weeks before the writer died. The papers arriving from Zurich join other documents gathered from around Germany and from a fetid Tel Aviv apartment that was once overrun by cats.
